★ Lincoln High Street · bespoke framers · since 1985

Lincoln's bespoke picture framers, since 1985.

Forty years framing on the High Street, a short walk down from the Cathedral and Steep Hill. Everything is made on the bench here at 140 High Street: over 300 frame styles, mounts cut to a hair, and the deep box framing that holds a shirt, a medal or a whole regiment together.

WHAT WE DO

Four trades off one Lincoln bench.

Bespoke framing

Over 300 frame styles on the wall, hand finished to the piece. Certificates, family photographs, watercolours, oils, and complex display frames for football shirts, medals and memorabilia. Over 65 percent of our stock is FSC timber from managed woodland.

Mount cutting

Every mount is cut in-house on a Valiani CNC cutter, accurate to 0.02mm with a crisp 45 degree bevel. A choice of 104 mountboard colours, white-core ph-neutral up to museum-level board, all Fine Art Trade Guild certified.

Giclee printing

Archival fine art prints on the Epson Stylus Pro 7800 with UltraChrome K3 ink, on a range of art papers and canvas. For artists and illustrators reproducing their own work to a standard that holds its colour for decades.

Frame restoration

Re-gilding ornate frames, remoulding and carving in gesso, wood and coloured clay, then colour-matching and patinating to the original. Cracks filled and stabilised, acid-free board fitted, timber checked for infestation. About two weeks.

OUR STORY · 1985 TO TODAY

1985. A framer opens on Lincoln High Street, below the Cathedral.

Speedframe has framed on the High Street for forty years. We call ourselves Lincoln's specialist framer because almost everything is made here: the cutting, the joining, the mounting and the printing, under one roof rather than sent away.

Stuart Allcock has run the workshop since 2002, and the bench has not moved. The kit has grown, a Valiani CNC mount cutter, an Epson giclee printer, but the work is still done a piece at a time, in front of you when it can be.

“Bring the piece in and we will work out how best to frame it.” The Speedframe bench

MOUNTS, GLASS & CONSERVATION

How far to go is your call.

A mount is not just a border. Cut on our Valiani CNC to 0.02mm with a 45 degree bevel, it lifts the work off the glass and keeps it in an acid-safe space. Boards run from white-core ph-neutral up to museum level, all Fine Art Trade Guild certified, in 104 colours.

Then the glass. Six options, matched to the piece and where it will hang, not sold by default.

  • Standard2mm float glass
  • Non-reflectingdiffused surface, cuts glare
  • UV filter99 percent UV protection
  • Low reflection70 percent UV, low glare
  • Museum99 percent UV, minimal reflection
  • Acrylicshatterproof glazing

FAQ

Questions we get at the counter.

Can you frame a football shirt, medals or memorabilia?

Yes, that is some of our favourite work. Shirts, regimental kit, medals, instruments and three-dimensional keepsakes go into deep box frames, float-mounted so the object sits proud of the glass. Bring it in and we will work out how best to show it.

What glass should I choose?

It depends on the piece and where it hangs. Standard float suits most work. UV filter slows fading in daylight, Museum glass adds near-invisible reflection control, and shatterproof acrylic suits larger or shipped pieces. We match the glass to the job rather than upsell it.

Can you print my own artwork?

Yes. We make archival giclee prints on the Epson Stylus Pro 7800 with UltraChrome K3 ink, on art papers or canvas. It is ideal for artists and illustrators reproducing original work, and we can frame the print here too.

Can you restore or re-gild an old frame?

We do. Re-gilding, remoulding in gesso and coloured clay, filling and stabilising cracks, then colour-matching and patinating so the repair disappears. We also fit acid-free board and treat timber for infestation. Restoration usually takes about two weeks.

Why are you closed on Wednesdays?

We close all day Wednesday and on Sundays. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nine to half five, and Saturday nine to half four. The quiet midweek day is when the bigger framing and restoration jobs get the bench to themselves.
